How to Share a PDF Securely With a Password
A secure PDF link starts with choosing who may open it. On PDF to Link, you can add a password to a published document's reading page and test the prompt before sharing. That password controls access through the service; it does not encrypt the PDF file itself or make the link expire automatically.

How do you protect a PDF to Link document?
Publish the document, open its dashboard settings, and add a document password. Share the reading URL and provide the password through a suitable separate channel. Before sending the URL, open it in a private browser window to confirm the prompt appears and that an incorrect password is rejected.
- Review the documentCheck that you have permission to share its contents and that web access is suitable for the information inside.
- Add a document passwordSet it in the document's privacy and reader settings before distributing the link.
- Test the readerOpen the published URL outside your signed-in session. Confirm the correct PDF is hidden until the password is entered.
- Share carefullySend the URL and password deliberately; revoke or change access if the intended audience changes.
Is a link password the same as PDF encryption?
No. A reading-page password is checked by the hosting service before the PDF is served. A password encrypted into the PDF file is part of the file's own protection and may be requested by a PDF application after download. These controls solve different problems and should not be described as interchangeable.
A recipient who has the page password may still be able to pass it to somebody else. Disabling a download button reduces a convenient path to save a file, but it cannot guarantee that a determined viewer will never retain information they can see.
Can the link expire automatically?
PDF to Link does not currently provide an automatic document expiration setting. You can remove a document or change its access settings, but should not promise a scheduled end date. If a specific expiry time is mandatory, choose a provider that explicitly offers that control and verify the current plan and retention rules before uploading.
Some OneDrive plans offer link expiration, subject to account and sharing settings. That is a feature of OneDrive, not of PDF to Link.
What should you check after sharing?
Revisit the document as a reader when you change settings. Keep a record of where you placed the URL, especially in public posts and printed materials. Removing or renaming a published link can break recipients' bookmarks and QR codes. If a document contains highly sensitive information, assess whether online publication is appropriate at all rather than relying only on a password.
Frequently asked questions
- Does a password make my PDF private to one person?
- No. Anyone who receives both the link and password may be able to open it. Use a different access model if you need named-recipient authorization.
- Can I set an expiration date on PDF to Link?
- No. Automatic document expiry is not currently available in PDF to Link.
- Does disabling download prevent all copying?
- No. It removes a download action in the reader but cannot guarantee that visible content is never copied or captured.
